Description
The Vitra Night Desk Clock is part of a series of clocks George Nelson was commissioned to design in 1947. Nelson analysed how people used clocks and concluded that they read the time by discerning the relative position of the hands, which made the use of numbers unnecessary. Furthermore, since most people wore wristwatches, he assumed that clocks had become more of a decorative element for interiors. These ideas provided the basis for the first collection of 14 timepieces, consisting of a completely new style of wall and compact table clocks.
Although the models all shared one common feature – the absence of numbers – the diversity of their shapes, colours, materials and designs could hardly have been greater. Explore Nelson's extensive collection of clocks here.

George Nelson
George Nelson was born in Connecticut in 1904 and went on to study architecture at Yale University, where he graduated in 1928. Nelson was one of the founders of the modernist architecture movement of the forties along with, Eliot Noyes, Charles Eames and Walter B. Ford - all of which he would later collaborate with. He became a highly regarded critic, author and commentator on design issues as well as his own exceptional creative talent. His Storagewall shelf system revolutionised the office environment and excited manufacturers Herman Miller who appointed Nelson as the company's design director from 1945-1965. Nelson also created other iconic designs including the Coconut Chair as well as a series of desk and wall clocks and series of Bubble Lamps for Herman Miller, now distributed by Hay. He died in 1986 but his memory still lives on as Vitra still manufacture his most iconic pieces under licence.
