Description
The original was made from fiberglass, rubber and riveted sheet aluminium as the centrepiece of an exhibition of his pieces at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney. It was widely acclaimed and was bought by the National Gallery of Australia. Its concept was based loosely on the chaise longue in Jacques-Louis Davids 1800 portrait of Madame Recamier. "I had this image of a fluid, aluminium form. The shape was sculpted out of a piece of foam, the exact same way youd create a surfboard. The only way to get the aluminium on was to beat little pieces of metal into shape with a wooden mallet and attach them with rivets. Thats where the airplane metaphor came from. So I called it the Lockheed Lounge" said Newson.
Here, the Lockheed Lounge Chair has been replicated into a miniature version of the full-sized chair. As part of the Vitra Design Museum collection miniature editions of classic chairs have been produced to celebrate modern furniture design history.
The construction, materials and colours correspond to the historical Vitra Design Museum collection originals, right down to the last detail. Because they are so true to the originals, the miniatures are not only valuable collector's items, but also ideal illustrative materials for universities, design colleges and architects.
